About Us

A Shelter-Kit® structure, whether it’s a house, barn, workshop or garage comes with a built-in benefit not found in any other structure built by a contractor – that sense of accomplishment and pride that only comes from building it yourself.

We’ve helped hundreds of people build their own cabins, houses, barns, garages and workshops since 1970. For over 50 years, Shelter-Kit® ​has been designing and producing kit buildings, for assembly by owners, in a wide range of sizes and styles to meet your requirements.  With so many existing designs, we have one that’s perfect for you!

We have designed barn or garage kits that include living space, as well as ranch houses, colonials, capes, and more, to meet each customer’s specific requirements.  We can work with you to design your building, help you obtain a building permit, and arrange shipping. We will be available to answer your questions before, during, and after construction.  We consider every order to be a special order, and we will work with you accordingly.  Lead times can be as short as five weeks for our Popular House Plans, but will be longer for Custom Designs and in our busier seasons.

Our building kits include all the materials to build a complete, weather tight shell, including the frame, siding [we do not precut siding], sheathing, hardware, roofing, and subfloors. We use 2 × 6 studs and 2 × 12 rafters. Our kits do not include windows and doors as part of the base price. Our kits are precut, making them easy to assemble. All materials are selected for quality and ease of assembly and fit. Please note that we do not include any interior materials, except subfloors.

Each building comes with a detailed Construction Manual written for amateur builders. The manual includes drawings and step-by-step instructions, specifically created for each kit. We offer many options for building size, stairs, dormers, ceiling heights, cathedral ceilings, etc. We will be glad to work with you to meet your specific requirements.
